Protect Your Home, Protect Your Health: Brown County Launches New Radon Mitigation Program (posted September 17, 2025)
By Adam Behnke, Communications Specialist for Brown County Public Health
Radon is a silent threat hiding in homes across our community. This naturally occurring, colorless, and odorless radioactive gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the number one cause among non-smokers. At Brown County Public Health, our goal is to increase awareness and provide people who live, work, and play in Brown County with the tools they need to protect themselves and their families.
That's why we are proud to announce the launch of the new Brown County Radon Mitigation Program. This initiative helps empower our community to test for radon and assist eligible homeowners with the cost of professional mitigation if elevated levels of the dangerous gas are found. This edition of the Healthy Herald explains how the program works. If you’d prefer to skip right to the application page, click here!
As Easy as 1, 2, 3
This program is simple, and you can take part by following an easy step-by-step process:
- Get a Free Test Kit: Pick up a limited, free short-term radon test kit at one of our two Brown County Public Health locations: the Sophie Beaumont building at 111 N. Jefferson St, Green Bay, WI 54301, or our facility at 2198 Glendale Avenue, Green Bay, WI 54303. You are also free to purchase your own radon test kit or employ a professional radon mitigation company to test your home.
- Test Your Home: Follow the instructions to perform a radon test in your home and submit the sample for analysis.
- Apply for the Mitigation Program: If your test results show elevated radon levels (over 4 pCi/L), submit your results and a completed application by January 1, 2026. You can submit your application online or in person at one of our Public Health locations.
The money will be paid directly to a certified radon mitigation company, ensuring it’s used for the intended public health purpose, and the work is done by a qualified professional. Those who are randomly selected for a $1,000 payment will be responsible for paying the remainder of the mitigation bill, whatever that amount ends up being.
Who is Eligible?
To participate in the Radon Mitigation Program, you must:
- Be served by Brown County Public Health.
- Be the owner of a single-family home.
Because the individual payments are more than $600, those who are randomly selected to receive the money will be required to fill out a W-9 form and will receive a 1099 form from Brown County for tax purposes.
Don't Guess, Test!
The best way to protect your home and your family from radon is to test. This new program provides a simple and affordable way to do just that. We encourage every eligible homeowner in Brown County to take this crucial first step. Click here to submit your application!
