The lab tests for coliform bacteria, including E. coli, which can be harmful to health when ingested by humans and pets. If there are high levels of E. coli, it is likely that fecal matter is in the water, which may carry harmful bacteria, viruses, and other organisms that can cause illness.
Brown County Public Health tests the following beaches:
- Bayshore Park
- Sunset Beach Park
- Duck Creek Quarry
- Ashwaumbomay Lake
- Communiversity Park
Before entering the beach, you will see a sign posted. Be sure to look at it because it will tell you if the beach is safe to swim in. See below for the three safety levels and recommendations according to the WI Department of Natural Resources:
SAFE: The beach is safe to swim in.
ADVISORY: Swimming in the water could make you sick. Swim at your own risk.
CLOSED: The E. coli concentration is too high to be considered safe for swimmers. Do NOT swim in the water.
