Brown County Public Health and the Brown County Library have launced a new partnership to provide digital radon testing devices to Brown County Residents. Patrons can use their library card to check out a device, just like a book to test their home. You can check out a radon testing device at any Brown County Library Branch. Radon is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas that comes from the natural decay of uranium in the ground. In Wisconsin, about 1 in every 10 homes has high radon levels. Exposure to radon can cause lung cancer. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the leading cause among non-smokers.

What do my results mean?
Look at the long-term average on your device (the biggest number).
- Less than 4 pCi/L: Your home has low radon levels. You should still re-test every 2-5 years in case radon levels in your home change.
- Above 4 pCi/L: Your home has high radon. We recommend that you test again with a short-term charcoal test to confirm your results. You can pick one up for free at either Brown County Public Health locations.
If you have high radon, you should reach out to a certified radon mitigation professional to learn more about having a radon mitigation system installed to lower your radon levels. Click here to learn more about how to find a certified contractor.
