Childhood lead poisoning occurs when children are exposed to lead, a toxic metal. When children breathe in or eat tiny amounts of lead, it can cause big problems. Lead poisoning can make it hard for kids to learn, pay attention, and behave well. The most common source of lead is from old houses (built before 1978), but multiple different sources exist. Preventing lead exposure is important as there is no safe level of lead in the human body. By cleaning our homes in a lead-safe way, washing hands, eating healthy, and getting regular check-ups, parents and caregivers can help keep their children safe.
Childhood lead poisoning is an issue in Brown County. Around 40 children are identified with lead poisoning each year in Brown County. A majority of these children live in rented homes built before 1950.
